Zionist groups are urging President-elect Donald Trump to prioritize the deportation of foreign students who have participated in anti-Israel protests on U.S. college campuses.
During the 2024 presidential campaign period, Trump vowed to deport foreign students who expressed support for terror groups during campus anti-Israel protests following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.
“One thing I do is, any student that protests, I will throw them out of the country,” Trump said in May during a private round-table event with his Jewish friends. “You know, there are a lot of foreign students. As soon as they hear that, they’re going to behave.” Additionally, the Republican Party platform, released in July, included a commitment to tackle antisemitism with the specific policy goal of revoking visas for foreign nationals who support terrorism and jihadism.
Now that Trump has won the election, Zionist groups are urging Trump to fulfill this promise.
“I think we’d like to see people who are on student visas, who have publicly and specifically endorsed Hamas or Hezbollah or what is a designated terrorist organization by the United States, and they’re showing they are very vocal in their support for them, that those students would lose their student visas to the United States and therefore be removed,” said Luke Moon, the executive director of the Philos Project. This organization reconnects Christians to their roots in Israel.
Israel First advocates and senior counselor James Carafano to the president at the Heritage Foundation echoed a similar statement to send a powerful message to other foreign students against the endorsement of terrorism. “You don’t have to deport every foreign student that ever lifted a sign that said ‘Free Palestine.’ But as soon as you start deporting people legitimately under revoking their student status, I think a lot of people will get the message that this is not a free lunch,” said Carafano, who is also one of the leaders of Project Esther, a group created by the Heritage Foundation to generate conservative proposals to combat antisemitism.
Richard Goldberg, a former National Security Council official during the first Trump administration, gave the Zionist groups the assurance they needed.
Goldberg stated that the priority of the incoming administration on addressing antisemitism, particularly on college campuses, is reflected in Trump’s campaign rhetoric and the Republican Party platform. He then added that Trump has emphasized his commitment to cracking down on antisemitic acts, and would therefore consider deporting foreign students on visas who are involved in such incidents.
“The president-elect made it very clear throughout the campaign and even in the Republican platform at the RNC that he is going to have a strong focus on rooting out antisemitism, particularly in higher education, including deporting visa holders who are behind a lot of these antisemitic incidents on campuses,” said Goldberg.
