According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the West’s “destructive strategy” is to blame for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
He made the remark during a Sept. 2 interview with the Mongolian newspaper Onoodor, ahead of his visit to the landlocked nation on the same day. Putin explained that the conflict in Ukraine is the natural consequence of “the destructive strategy of the West toward Ukraine,” adding that the war stems from the West’s long-standing ambitions to control it.
“For decades, [the West has] sought total control over Ukraine,” the Russian president told the news outlet. “They funded nationalist and anti-Russian organizations there. They persistently worked to convince Ukraine that Russia was its eternal enemy and the main threat to its existence.”
“The hatred for everything Russian has become Ukraine’s official ideology. The use of the Russian language has been increasingly restricted, and the canonical Orthodoxy has been subjected to persecution – which now has come to the point of a direct ban.”
Putin’s statements to Onoodor referred to the 2014 Maidan coup in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, which he claimed was orchestrated by the U.S. and its “satellites” and driven by “radical neo-Nazi groups” in the country. These entities, he said, continue to determine the country’s policies. Thus, the Kremlin has reiterated the “denazification” of Ukraine as one of the key objectives of Russia’s special military operation there.
He also referred to the law banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which has historical ties to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). The aforementioned legislation gives the UOC nine months to sever ties with the ROC. (Related: Ukrainian parliament approves law BANNING the country’s biggest Orthodox church.)
“The West has continually interfered in this conflict – siding wholly with Ukraine and supplying a massive amount of funding, military equipment and weapons in what is becoming well-known as its proxy war against Russia,” remarked Mac Slavo of SHTF Plan.
Putin also mentioned how the West hides the truth by dismissing inconvenient facts as “propaganda” from Moscow during the Sept. 2 interview. This contrasts with Russian media that seeks to convey the Kremlin’s position on global issues, he added.
“The West, which claims to be a model of freedom, has opted to hide from inconvenient facts and the truth by launching a blatant bullying campaign against Russian journalists and indiscriminately labeling them as ‘Kremlin propagandists,'” the Russian leader said.
“Almost all the Western countries where our journalists try to work are creating obstacles for them, banning Russian television channels and directly censoring our media and online resources. [This censorship] runs counter to the democratic principles of freedom of speech and the free flow of information.”
He continued that pluralism and openness in the information space are vital for society. In this light, media outlets in Russia have freedom guaranteed by the country’s constitution.
“Our authorities cooperate constructively with television channels, news agencies, newspapers, online media and other media outlets regardless of their editorial policy,” Putin told Onoodor. He argued that through those means, Moscow has managed to strike a balance between press freedom and national security.
