Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire has donated $300,000 to the campaign of former President Donald Trump, in a move that he declared could lose him friends and business ventures and could see him get “demonized” by mainstream media.
Maguire’s donation and declaration of support for Trump came at the heels of the former president’s conviction as he was “found guilty” on all 34 counts brought forth by District Attorney Alvin Bragg on the hush money trial in New York.
President Joe Biden, victorious from the recent verdict, called Trump a “convicted felon” and unhinged who “snapped” after the 2020 election.
“For the first time in American history, a former president that is a convicted felon is now seeking the office of the presidency,” Biden told a crowd at a fundraising event in Greenwich, Connecticut. But this did not stop Maguire from supporting Trump saying, “The timing isn’t a coincidence.” In a lengthy post on X, formerly Twitter, the former Google Ventures partner explained why he is for the ex-POTUS in the 2024 elections.
“Back in 2016 I had drunk the media Kool-Aid and was scared out of my mind about Trump. I donated to Hilary Clinton’s campaign and voted for her,” he tweeted. “Now, in 2024, I believe this is one of the most important elections of my lifetime and I’m supporting Trump.”
He added that he does not care if the media will antagonize him or if people will hate him. “I still believe it’s the right thing to do. I refuse to live in a society where people are afraid to speak,” he stated.
One of the reasons he cited why he is not voting for Biden is when he found out how Afghans fell to their deaths from American C-17 airplanes at the Kabul International Airport during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.
He recalled flying out of the airport while deployed to Afghanistan with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, saying: “This was personal for me as it was for anyone that served in Afghanistan.”
“We gave up one of the most strategic air bases in the world and arguably stability in Kabul, for political gain to be able to say that Biden ended the war in Afghanistan. And we did it in the most incompetent manner possible, literally with people falling from our airplanes. Everyone I have spoken with that served in Afghanistan knows this,” he added.
Maguire also cited Biden’s “worst foreign policy,” which has resulted in two major wars breaking out, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Iran’s proxy attack against Israel. “Was the timing just bad luck? I don’t believe so. I believe that a weak America leads to a chaotic world,” he said.
The magnate also discussed in his post the double standards seen under the current administration, including only Trump being indicted for having classified documents despite Biden and others being found with such documents, Biden resuming the building of the border wall to little complaint from the media, Democrat politicians denying the results of elections despite Trump being criticized for doing so, among other issues.
An entire section of Maguire’s social media post was dedicated to his deep analysis of the recent “fishy” lawfare used against Trump. He argued that the cases were too complicated for most to follow and have been truly unfair to the former president.
“I understand that normally when there’s smoke there’s fire, but in this case, I think when there’s smoke there’s lawfare,” he said
First is the election interference case where Jack Smith was appointed special counsel to prosecute Trump. He pointed out how Smith previously got the Virginia governor convicted of corruption charges, which were unanimously overturned by the Supreme Court.
“Why would you choose Jack Smith to be the special counsel for this case? Maybe if all you’re trying to do is to get charges to stick before an election, even if you know they’ll be overturned subsequently by the Supreme Court?” Maguire queried.
Another legal attack on Trump was Georgia’s election interference case where Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis selected an outside lawyer to prosecute Trump. The catch was he was someone she was having a romantic relationship with. Nathan Wade’s law firm made about $700,000 after Willis appointed him. Wade was thrown out of the case but Willis is still pretty much in.
Trump was also ordered by Judge Arthur Engoron to pay over $350 million in civil judgment that he committed bank fraud. According to Maguire, this was an incident where no harm had been done as the banks had already been fully repaid with interest. Engoron also argued that Mar-a-Lago was worth only between $18 and $27.6 million when Trump had said it was worth between $426.5 and $612 million.
“Judge Engoron tried to compare apples to oranges, with an appraised value vs. market value for a property that is very clearly worth something close to Trump’s range,” he emphasized.
