U.S. President Joe Biden has reaffirmed the unwavering support of Washington for Israel amid escalating tensions with Iran following a deadly strike on the Iranian Embassy in Syria.
On April 1, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) targeted the Iranian Embassy building in Damascus, Syria, which resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian commanders. The strike claimed the lives of Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, former leader of the elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016, along with his deputy, Gen. Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimim and five other officers.
In response, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, declared that Israel “must be punished and it shall be” during his April 10 speech delivered during the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday. Tehran vowed retaliation for the alleged attack by Tel Aviv on its consular building in Damascus.
“The evil regime made a mistake and it should be punished and will be punished,” the Ayatollah said. True to its word, the Islamic republic launched an attack on Israel using drones and missiles during the two-day Operation True Promise – a retaliation for the April 1 embassy bombing. The operation, which ran from April 13 to 14, managed to deplete Tel Aviv’s air defense munitions.
Despite the looming threat from Iran, the Biden administration stood firm with its decision. (Related: Biden regime providing nearly all the weapons used by Israel to commit genocide.)
“As I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad. Let me say it again: Ironclad,” Biden remarked during a White House press conference with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. “We’re going to do all we can to protect [Israel’s] security.”
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also reiterated Biden’s position in a phone call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The U.S. and its allies are now on high alert, bracing for potential missile or drone strikes by Iran or its proxies targeting military and government installations in Israel.
According to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, the strikes may involve high-precision weaponry and could occur within the coming days. This assessment is based on intelligence from both U.S. and Israeli sources, painting a picture of mounting concern over the prospect of an attack.
Moreover, Maj. Gen. Rahim Safavi, the former chief commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), warned Israel earlier in April that none of its embassies are secure in the aftermath of the IDF strike.
“None of the embassies of the [Israeli] regime are safe anymore,” Safavi said.
However, Israel won’t step back from the potential attack. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz wrote on X: “If Iran attacks from its territory, Israel will react and attack in Iran.”
The exchange of dialogues between Israeli and Iranian officials adds to the growing fear that an open war between Tehran and Tel Aviv could spiral into a wider confrontation. The warnings from Safavi and Katz further fuel the potential for a broader conflict to erupt.
