The United States and the United Kingdom both assisted Israel in neutralizing Iranian drones and missiles launched against Israel, according to a report by the Guardian.
The British outlet said “a hastily assembled coalition” – which included the U.S. and the U.K. – helped Tel Aviv take on the attack by Tehran on April 13 and 14. As the mass salvo of drones and missiles approached Israeli territory, the Jewish nation scrambled its fighter jets to intercept the projectiles as per Israeli news outlets. U.S. President Joe Biden remarked that Washington had built up its forces in the run-up to the widely anticipated attack, dubbed Operation True Promise by Iran. He added that the reinforcements to Israel had paid off.
“At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week,” Biden said in a written statement. “Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our service members, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles.”
Meanwhile, the British Ministry of Defense (MOD) also confirmed the participation of fighter jets and refueling aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF). The planes, which took off from bases in Cyprus, had a two-fold role in addressing both the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Tehran itself.
“In response to increased Iranian threats and the growing risk of escalation in the Middle East, the [British] government has been working with partners across the region to encourage de-escalation and prevent further attacks,” said a statement from the MOD.
“We have moved several additional RAF jets and air refueling tankers to the region. These will bolster Operation Shader, which is the U.K.’s existing counter-ISIS operation in Iraq and Syria. In addition, these U.K. jets will intercept any airborne attacks within range of our existing missions as required.”
“The Biden administration sent the head of U.S. Central Command, Gen. Erik Kurilla, to Israel … to help coordinate defenses against an Iranian attack. Kurilla was reported to have left the country [shortly] before the first drones were launched,” the Guardian continued.
“As well as fulfilling U.S. defense commitments to Israel, the Biden administration is seeking to prevent out-of-control escalation leading to a regional war. U.S. officials have said that their ability to restrain Israel’s response would depend a lot on what was hit inside Israel and the number of casualties from the Iranian attack.”
Aside from the U.S. and the U.K., the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has also joined in the fray. According to a report by Reuters that cited two regional security sources, jets from the Royal Jordanian Air Force downed dozens of Iranian drones flying across the country’s northern and central regions.
The report further stated that the drones had been brought down over the east bank of the Jordan River, with the unmanned aerial vehicles heading in the direction of Jerusalem. Others, meanwhile, were intercepted close to the Iraqi-Syrian border.
Amman earlier said it closed its airspace to all incoming, departing and transiting aircraft starting on the night of April 13. Officials in the Jordanian government told Reuters that the move was among precautionary measures put in place in the event of an Iranian strike across its border.
“The relevant authorities took the decision to close the airspace for precautionary reasons as a result of the surrounding security situation,” said Jordanian Government Communications Minister Muhannad Al Mubaideen. He also denied media reports that the kingdom had announced a state of emergency, adding that there was no cause for concern among its citizens.
Outside of Al Mubaideen’s remarks, there was no confirmation from the Jordanian government on its military role. But the Iranian news agency Fars, which is run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, cited a source saying the Iranian government was closely monitoring Jordan’s actions. If Amman acted in Tel Aviv’s defense, Tehran could make the kingdom “the next target.”
