Former British Prime Minister (PM) Boris Johnson denounced journalist Tucker Carlson for interviewing Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the former Fox News host a “traitor to journalism.”
Johnson used the Feb. 9 edition of his column for the Daily Mail to rebuke Carlson over his alleged “bum-sucking servility” to Putin. The former PM also denounced the journalist for being “the stooge of the tyrant” and “the dictaphone to the dictator.”
“He was just the medium, the sewer, the hose by which the untreated slurry of Putin’s message could be sprayed where Putin wants it most – over the fertile heartlands of America. In his fawning, guffawing, slack-jawed happiness at having a ‘scoop,’ he betrayed his viewers and listeners around the world.”
The former British leader also lamented how Carlson “didn’t ask tough questions” – such as why Putin is allegedly “using the most brutal means of modern warfare to maim and murder innocent Ukrainian civilians.” Johnson also denounced Carlson for refusing to bring up the supposed “torture, rapes [and] blowing up of kindergartens – all of it wholly unnecessary and unprovoked.”
“The Russian leader chose to invade a sovereign and independent European country, with no justification other than his arrogant desire to crush that country and to rebuild the Soviet Union. Like [Adolf] Hitler, he is of course lying about his future intentions. After all, he lied barefacedly about his intention to invade Ukraine.”
However, his move to accuse Carlson of being a “traitor” appears to be a projection on his part. During Carlson’s interview with Putin, the Russian leader disclosed that Johnson was indeed the one responsible for Ukraine ditching a peace deal. The document, already inked by Kyiv and Moscow, would have ended the war fastest.
According to Putin, Davyd Arakhamia – the leader of the ruling Servant of the People (SN) party in Ukraine’s unicameral Verkhovna Rada parliament – expressed interest in signing the peace deal. This preliminary agreement had been reached in the city of Istanbul in Turkey following direct negotiations with Ukrainian officials. However, the former British PM intervened and talked Arakhamia out of signing. (Related: Putin ‘tried everything possible’ to make peace – Ukrainian diplomat.)
“Arakhamia publicly stated to the world that [Ukraine was] ready to sign the document, but Johnson came and dissuaded [him], saying it was better to fight Russia,” Putin recounted. He added that Washington also convinced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a member of SN, to reject any potential peace deal.
A BBC report from September 2022 also mentioned Johnson’s disapproval of a potential peace settlement between Kyiv and Moscow. The former British PM told the House of Commons, the U.K.’s lower house of parliament, that there is “absolutely no sign” that Russia wants to reach a deal with Ukraine.
He also warned against any “land for peace” deal, adding that Moscow could not be trusted to adhere to its terms. However, Putin’s remarks to Carlson prove that Johnson is indeed lying through his teeth. Both the erstwhile PM and Arakhamia have denied the allegations.
Johnson, in his Daily Mail column, reiterated that Putin’s claim of his involvement in the now-collapsed peace deal was “ludicrous.” He also stressed his September 2022 remarks against the Russian leader, claiming: “Why on Earth should he be trusted now to respect any peace deal, even if the Ukrainians tried to do one? He obviously can’t be trusted over Poland, the Baltic states or anywhere in the vast periphery of the former Soviet Union.”
