Muslim Americans within the Democratic Party have announced their intention to mobilize millions of Muslim voters to withhold both donations and votes in support of Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign if he fails to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
The National Muslim Democratic Council, comprised of Democratic Party leaders from pivotal and closely contested states likely to determine the election outcome, including Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, has urged President Biden to leverage his influence with Israel to facilitate a ceasefire.
In an open letter titled “2023 Ceasefire Ultimatum,” the Muslim leaders have committed to rallying Muslim voters to “refrain from endorsing, supporting or voting for any candidate who endorses the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian people.”
The council’s letter addresses what they view as the Biden administration’s unconditional support, which includes funding and armaments, contributing significantly to the ongoing violence resulting in civilian casualties and undermining the trust of voters who had previously placed their faith in him. This open letter represents the latest manifestation of growing anger and frustration within Arab and Muslim American communities regarding President Biden’s failure to condemn Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas terrorists from Gaza, which Israeli officials claim resulted in 1,400 fatalities and the taking of 239 hostages.
Despite these calls for a ceasefire, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday, Oct. 30, that he would not agree to halt the attacks on Gaza. U.S. national security spokesman John Kirby explained, “Hamas is the only one that would gain from that right now.”
Basim Elkarra, executive director of the Sacramento Valley Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), highlighted the significance of Muslim votes for Biden’s 2024 reelection bid, noting that Michigan’s 16 electoral votes were secured by a slim margin of just 2.6 percent in 2020.
Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR in Minnesota, anticipates that Muslim American leaders in other pivotal states essential for Biden’s 2024 reelection will make similar demands. He expressed his stance, stating that he has no alternative but to vote against Biden in 2024 unless he calls for an end to the conflict. He clarified that he was speaking as an individual and not on behalf of CAIR.
In the 2020 election, approximately 70 percent of Muslim Americans supported Biden, as per Hussein.
The visible discontent and division in Washington exemplified the growing frustration among the left wing of the Democratic Party concerning the Biden administration’s response to the Israeli-Gaza conflict. While some progressives distanced themselves from the White House due to its steadfast pro-Israel stance, fractures also emerged within the progressive movement itself, reflecting the intense emotions provoked by the ongoing conflict.
Discontent was not limited to the House floor, as the impact of Israel’s actions on U.S. politics and civil society became increasingly pronounced following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.
On the same afternoon, during a White House news conference, Biden faced questions about the rising Palestinian death toll.
Biden responded with skepticism about the accuracy of the death count reported by the Gaza health ministry, which indicated nearly 7,000 Palestinian casualties since the conflict’s outset. His statement, characterizing civilian casualties as an unfortunate consequence of warfare, was strongly criticized by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who described it as “shocking and dehumanizing.”
A Gallup poll released on Thursday, Nov. 2, revealed a substantial 11-percentage-point drop in Biden’s approval rating among Democrats in just one month, reaching a record low of 75 percent. This decline was driven by the disappointment among Democratic voters regarding Biden’s stance on Israel.
Furthermore, a poll released by the progressive firm Data for Progress last week found that 66 percent of likely U.S. voters either strongly or somewhat agree that the U.S. should call for a ceasefire in the conflict.
