Several videos have surfaced on the microblogging platform Twitter showing various street fights in Las Vegas during the Memorial Day weekend.
As per David Hookstead, a reporter for OutKick covering a variety of topics with a focus on football and culture, Las Vegas has looked more like a city in a failed state than a tourism hotspot during the said period.
“Sin City is a place that welcomes around 40 million people annually. It is a location where you can drink some beer, play blackjack and cut loose with your friends. It’s supposed to be a place of enjoyment,” Hookstead wrote. “However, Vegas looked like a hellhole over the Memorial Day weekend. Several videos shared online show people beating the living tar out of each other.”
Twitter user @Networkinvegas posted a video on May 29 of two men challenging two well-built security personnel while two more men in uniform tackle women inside an establishment in the renowned Las Vegas street. Toward the end of the video, the man was handcuffed by police marshals who came to the area. The next day, the account also posted more videos of men wearing civilian clothes attacking each other inside the Fremont Hotel and Casino. Later during the same day, another encounter was shared on the Twitter account.
“Another one of the many fights in Las Vegas this weekend, courtesy of new ghetto visitors our town now caters to… Sent to us last night from the Cosmopolitan. It’s nonstop, it’s everywhere including in the high-end resorts that are now filled with criminals!” NetworkingVegas added and appended the hashtag #VegashasFallen.
Hookstead could not help but look back to how things used to be in the gambling capital of the United States. According to him, it used to be a city where people could enjoy an awesome vacation. “You start with a couple of breakfast beers, walk the strip, hit up Ellis Island for five-dollar 3:2 blackjack, grab a steak somewhere, head to Fremont and play at El Cortez until you’re too drunk to see straight. Or if you’re looking for a more casual experience, you can even check out a spot like the Mob Museum if you need a break from the booze,” he said.
The host of the podcast “American Joyride” expressed disappointment seeing see the difference between these videos from Sin City and a failed state with no safety and protection. “These morons are treating it like it’s an open audition for the [Ultimate Fighting Championship] UFC. It’s disgusting and despicable,” Hookstead added.
Twitter users commented on the shared videos and said that it has always been this “chaotic” in Vegas. “I’ve been in the casino business since 1994. There have been fights every weekend since the mob left town. The difference is that everybody has a camera, internet & social media now,” Keith Lyle wrote in response to the shared video.
“Worked security in LV for years, downtown has always been a hotspot for trouble. Even down on the Strip where I worked, we had trouble on a regular basis. Can’t even imagine how bad it is now,” @prepconsulting1 wrote.
About 20 miles from the chaotic Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street, crime and violence also thrive. Currently, the police are looking into a murder-suicide that took place Sunday, May 28, in the 7800 block of Odysseus Avenue near Buffalo Drive and Elkhorn Road. According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD), they found a woman with apparent stab wounds and a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced both individuals dead at the scene. Metro homicide detectives determined that the man stabbed his ex-girlfriend and then shot himself.
The identification of the deceased and the actual cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
