Newly released emails reveal that in January 2020, Dr. Anthony Fauci possessed crucial information regarding the origins of COVID-19. However, during that critical period when the nation was just beginning to comprehend the virus, Dr. Fauci opted not to disclose the information to the American people. Rather, he worked to keep it hidden, The Federalist reported this week.
At 10:32 p.m. on January 31, 2020, Dr. Kristian Andersen, a British researcher who has received millions of dollars in grants from the NIH, sent an email to Dr. Fauci. In the email, Dr. Andersen cautioned Dr. Fauci about certain matters:
[O]ne has to look really closely at all the sequences to see that some of the features (potentially) look engineered . . . Eddie [Holmes], Bob [Garry], Mike [Ferguson] and myself all find the genome inconsistent with evolutionary theory.
At 12:29 a.m. on February 1, two hours after receiving the email from Dr. Andersen, Dr. Fauci emailed his longtime deputy, Dr. Hugh Auchincloss. The email contained a paper co-authored by Dr. Ralph Baric and Dr. Zhengli-Li Shi, also known as the “bat woman” from Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The paper emphasized NIH-funded gain-of-function research on coronaviruses carried out by the WIV. Dr. Fauci informed Dr. Auchincloss that he should read the paper immediately:
It is essential that we speak this [morning]. Keep your cell phone on . . . read this paper . . . you will have tasks today that must be done.
“Urgency. Intensity,” noted The Federalist.
At 2:48 a.m., two hours after emailing Dr. Auchincloss, Dr. Fauci sent another email, this time to Dr. Robert Kadlec, who was the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the Department of Health and Human Services under the Trump administration. The email included an article that minimized the possibility of a lab leak and argued in favor of a natural origin of COVID-19. Dr. Fauci’s email contained only a brief message: “Bob, this came out today. Gives a balanced view.”
Suddenly, there was no urgency or intensity in the former top immunologist’s tone.
“Why was Dr. Fauci so concerned when emailing his deputy but so calm when emailing his boss? Why didn’t he send Dr. Kadlec the Baric-Shi paper? The paper that supported the original message from Dr. Andersen that COVID-19 looked engineered, was inconsistent with evolutionary theory, and linked American tax dollars to gain of function research at the WIV [Wuhan Institute of Virology],” The Federalist noted.
Later that morning, at 11:47 a.m., Dr. Auchincloss replied to Dr. Fauci:
The paper you sent me says the experiments were performed before the gain-of-function pause but have since been reviewed and approved by NIH. Not sure what this means since [we are] sure that no coronavirus work has gone through the P3 framework. [We] will try to determine if we have any distant ties to this work abroad.
That email from Dr. Auchincloss appears to substantiate Dr. Fauci’s concerns: The email suggested that gain-of-function research at the WIV had been financed with American tax dollars and had not received appropriate oversight through the P3 framework.
At the time of the emails, Dr. Fauci was already aware of a deadly virus spreading in Wuhan, China. Within a span of just 13 hours, between 10:32 p.m. on January 31, 2020, and 11:47 a.m. on February 1, 2020, Dr. Fauci became aware of three additional facts.
The first fact that Dr. Fauci became aware of was that American taxpayers had contributed funding for potentially hazardous gain-of-function research in Wuhan, China. Secondly, he learned that this research had not undergone the necessary safety review process, known as the P3 framework. Finally, Dr. Fauci became aware that the virus responsible for the pandemic appeared to have been artificially engineered and did not conform to what would be expected through natural evolution, the outlet reported.
Fauci then “organized a conference call for the evening of February 1, 2020. On the call were 11 virologists from around the world, including Dr. Andersen who sent Dr. Fauci the email less than 24 hours earlier. Almost all the participants on the call had previously been awarded American taxpayer-funded grants by Dr. Fauci,” The Federalist reported.
Not on the call were Trump administration officials such as the then-CDC director, or Fauci’s boss at the NIH, or Dr. Brett Giroir, Assistant Secretary for Health, or Dr. Deborah Birx, the soon-to-be COVID-19 Response Coordinator.
It’s unclear what was discussed on the conference call because all of the information has been redacted from the official documents and emails related to the call, the outlet reported.
We think we know why.
Fauci has to be held accountable. Will Republicans step up?
