Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has been one of President Donald J. Trump’s most optimistic supporters and ardent defenders, but he’s now sounding a note of caution, after the commander-in-chief has gotten hammered in the press and by members of Congress for speaking the truth about both sides being at fault for what happened last weekend in Charlottesville.
Trump will have to make “serious changes” if he is to salvage and stabilize his presidency, Gingrich said Friday — the same day that Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, left the White House following a controversial interview he gave to a Left-wing publication earlier in the week in which he contradicted the president on many fronts.
“I think he’s in a position right now where he’s much more isolated than he realizes,” Gingrich said in an interview with Fox News’ Bill Hemmer, as reported by The Daily Caller. “On the Hill, he has far more people willing to sit to one side and not help him right now, and I think that he needs to recognize that he’s taken a good first step with bringing in General Kelly, but he needs to think about what has not worked. You don’t get down to 35 percent approval and have people in your own party shooting at you and conclude that everything’s going fine.”
“How many times have we had this conversation? It was John McCain, Gold Star families and Access Hollywood. Is this week that much different than the numerous other situations?” Hemmer inquired.
“It is only different in that you go through little ground, little ground, little ground, and after a while you have enough different people pull back that you are in a qualitatively different position and right now, that if he wants to get his agenda enacted that if he wants get things done and have a presidency that is stable, he is going to have to have a couple of serious changes,” Gingrich continued. “I think ‘The Art of the Comeback,’ which is a fascinating book that he wrote in 1997, is a really helpful reminder and he needs to think of what hasn’t been working and what he will do that is more effective in the rest of the presidency.”
There’s no question that Trump’s six-month presidency has been rocked in unprecedented ways. But what’s also true is that Trump has been attacked mercilessly, and in truly unprecedented ways — by the Washington swamp. (Related: Trump schools dishonest establishment media as he doubles down on his initial claim that “both sides” share blame for Charlottesville violence.)
Elements within the federal bureaucracy have worked behind the scenes to subvert him. The disgusting “mainstream” media has attacked him in ways it has never attacked a sitting president. And political establishment figures of both parties have done everything they could to disrupt and derail his agenda, which just happens to be the same one Americans voted for when they handed him a historic electoral victory.
Gingrich, himself very familiar with the inner workings of Washington, knows who pulls all the strings. He sees more than sharks in the water; he sees Trump on a sinking ship surrounded by those sharks, and he knows they are just waiting for the boat to slip underwater so they can finish him off.
What’s really disturbing is that the assault against Trump makes it crystal clear that Americans — all Americans — have lost control over their government. We elected Trump in the hope and belief that, finally, we would have a president who would truly put our country ahead of all others. The attacks against him are an attack on all of us.
Trump represents our last, best hope to prevent that from happening. Newt apparently sees that as well.
