Are 200,000 U.S. acres going to be returned to Mexico in border line mistake?

Everybody knows that mistakes happen – they are a part of life. Its not everyday, though, that a mistake is so big that it costs 200,000 acres of land.

According to Chihuahua Senator Patricio Martinez Garcia, a total of 214,381 acres of land owned by the United States since the 19th century actually belongs to Mexico. If this is the case, then the United States may one day be forced to return it in its entirety.

So far, the United States has not been compelled to address the issue because there is no concrete evidence of a geographical error. However, Senator Garcia is currently in the process of acquiring funds for topographic and satellite studies to get the proof that he needs.

If in fact the territory does belong to Mexico, the country will send a diplomatic note to the United States and claim it as their own.

The case would call for a legal review process conducted by both countries because according to Garcia, 99 percent of the land is unoccupied, inhabited only in Nogales and Arizona.

Unfortunately, this issue has come to fruition at a time when relations with Mexico are already on thin ice, primarily due to President Trump’s immigration agenda. Trump has stated numerous times that in addition to deporting criminal illegal aliens our of the country, he will order the construction of a wall along the southern border and force Mexico to pay for it. Mexico President Enrique Neito, however, has declared that his country will not be paying. “It is evident that we have some differences with the new government of the United States, like the topic of the wall, that Mexico of course will not pay,” he said in January. In response, President Trump explained that Mexico will more than likely reimburse the United States after the wall is complete. “I could wait about a year and a half until we finish our negotiations with Mexico, which will start immediately after we get to office, but I don’t want to wait,” then president-elect Trump said. Just a few weeks later, President Neito cancelled a meeting that he and President Trump had scheduled over disagreements about who would pay for the wall along the southern border. His decision to cancel came just hours after Donald Trump warned Neito on Twitter to either agree to providing funds for the wall or stay home.

Mexico is one of the United State’s most important trade partners, and growing tension between the two countries will only make things worse for the citizens.
