Border Patrol for the northern Swanton Sector in the Northeastern United States reported more than 1,400 migrant apprehensions in April, surpassing the combined apprehension totals for 2021 and 2022.
Border Patrol Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia announced this milestone, highlighting how the migrant crisis is affecting more parts of the U.S. beyond its border with Mexico. (Related: America sees 550% increase in illegal immigrants coming in from Canada.)
“Another record-breaking milestone in northern border history. Swanton Sector continues to encounter an unprecedented number of undocumented migrants, with well over 1,400 apprehensions in April, surpassing the total number of apprehensions of FY 21 and FY 22 combined,” wrote Garcia in a statement posted on X.
The recent arrest milestone is the latest in a growing trend of migrant encounters in the area and also through the entire U.S.-Canada border at large. The announcement also follows a report of the arrest of 220 illegal immigrants in one week – the highest number of weekly arrests in the sector’s history.
“Swanton Sector continues to encounter an unprecedented number of undocumented migrants,” Garcia said. “During the week of April 22, Champlain Border Patrol Agents apprehended a total of 220 subjects, the highest number ever encountered in a single week in Swanton Sector history.”
The Swanton Sector, a section of the northern border managed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), spans across New Hampshire, Vermont and the northeastern counties of New York.
Of those caught between ports of entry during that time, Border Patrol agents apprehended over 10,000. The Swanton Sector by far dealt with the highest number of illegal alien apprehensions, having arrested nearly 7,000 illegal immigrants attempting to cross between ports of entry, CBP data shows.
CBP warned that if the current trend continues, migrant apprehensions in the Swanton Sector will easily surpass the reported apprehensions in 2023.
According to CBP data for the northern border, there have been over 7,500 migrant arrests this year between ports of entry, with over 5,000 of those arrests occurring at the Swanton Sector alone.
In fiscal year 2023, the sector encountered nearly 7,000 migrants, significantly more than the 1,065 encounters in fiscal 2022 and the 365 encounters in fiscal 2021.
CBP also reported that there were nearly 190,000 encounters along the northern border in fiscal year 2023. Of those, a total of 487 were suspected terrorists – more than the 249 suspected terrorists who were caught trying to sneak into the U.S. through the southern border in the same fiscal year.
While the northern border sees a surge in illegal immigration, these numbers are still dwarfed by those at the U.S.-Mexico border. Border Patrol agents at the southern border have recorded approximately 6 million encounters since Biden took office, the latest data shows.
