Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of former President Donald Trump, said former Fox News host Tucker Carlson could make a good running mate for his father.
The younger Trump expressed this possibility during an appearance on “Wake Up America” on Newsmax, where he shared this with the networks’ Rob Finnerty. He highlighted the close relationship between Carlson and the elder Trump, particularly their shared stance on ending so-called “never-ending wars.”
“That clearly would be on the table, right? I would love to see that happen,” Donald Jr. said. “That would certainly be a contender. I mean, they’re very friendly – I think they agree on virtually all of these things.”
Finnerty also touched on other potential running mates for the former president. “You’re never going to rule out someone that is a leading contender,” the younger Trump said when Finnerty brought up Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The governor, who landed second place at the Iowa caucuses, withdrew from the race and threw his support behind the elder Trump.
The Newsmax anchor also proposed former Housing Secretary Dr. Ben Carson as a potential vice president. While Donald Jr. praised Carson as “a great American” who is “steadfast and loyal,” he argued that the former secretary “is almost too nice for politics.”
Meanwhile, Carlson – the founder of the eponymous Tucker Carlson Network – downplayed the idea of him running for public office, much more the second-highest position in the land. “[It’s] kind of hard to envision.”
The 54-year-old Carlson hosted a primetime show on Fox News for almost seven years, before his unexplained termination in April 2023. His firing came just days after the network agreed to pay $787 million to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems. The complaint arose from the alleged “spread of lies” about the 2020 presidential election, which Carlson denounced in his program.
The elder Trump holds a significant polling edge over former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, the last competitor standing in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Other rivals such as DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have conceded, throwing their support behind the former president.
Though he faces legal peril in a series of indictments in federal and state courts – including for his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election – the former president remains the odds-on favorite for the nomination. In turn, the prospect of whom Trump may pick as a potential running mate has generated substantial interest and speculation.
The elder Trump has previously remarked that he would consider Carlson for the job. This time, however, he appears to be singing a different tune. When pressed if he would be open to mending fences with any of his erstwhile rivals, he pointed to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie – but said he “doesn’t see” any partnership.
Days before the Jan. 15 Iowa caucuses that he won, the elder Trump said he has made up his mind about his potential running mate in case he wins. However, he has remained silent over this matter.
“Well, I can’t tell you that really,” the former president responded to members of the media during an Iowa town hall meeting. “I mean, I know who it’s going to be.” (Related: Trump 100% confident HE WILL WIN against Biden in the 2024 presidential election.)
The former president’s campaign team sought to quickly downplay his remark. One campaign adviser told NBC News that “nothing is finalized” with regard to the elder Trump’s vice presidential pick. “He’ll announce his final pick when he’s ready to,” they said.
