Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife Nadine are facing federal bribery charges, with the lawmaker insisting on his innocence.
The Menendez couple was indicted in a New York federal court for accepting substantial bribes from and being involved in a “corrupt relationship” with three New Jersey businessmen. In exchange for thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz convertible, home mortgage payments, and more, Bob would use his power and influence as a U.S. senator to favor his co-conspirators.
Per the indictment, the senator allegedly provided sensitive U.S. government information to secretly aid the government of Egypt. He also allegedly pressured an official at the U.S. Department of Agriculture to protect a business monopoly in Egypt on behalf of Wael Hana, one of the three businessmen Bob partnered with. Moreover, he used his office and influence in Capitol Hill to disrupt a state-level criminal probe of another partner.
It also claimed that Bob recommended a specific person to President Joe Biden as a nominee for the U.S. attorney for New Jersey. This person, the indictment claimed, could be influenced to disrupt the prosecution against Fred Daibes, another businessman and a long-time fundraiser for the senator.
According to the indictment, a June 2022 raid on the Menendezes’ home in Englewood Cliffs and a safe deposit box owned by the couple yielded the “fruits of … [their] corrupt bribery agreement.” Among the items seized were huge amounts of cash and several gold bars. The indictment seeks the forfeiture of these assets, along with the Englewood Cliffs property.
Following the charges, the New Jersey senator has agreed to step down as chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) will lead the committee in Bob’s absence. (Related: Sen. Bob Menendez vows not to resign after indictment over alleged bribes.)
According to the indictment, Bob cultivated a relationship with Hana with the help of Nadine. The Egyptian businessman reportedly held close ties to officials in Cairo.
Hana and Bob’s wife purportedly organized meetings with the senator and Egyptian officials seeking military sales and financing. As the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, the New Jersey senator held significant sway over such matters. According to the indictment, Bob and Nadine allegedly promised to utilize his position at Capitol Hill to help facilitate those deals – in exchange for a “low-or-no-show job” for her.
The lawmaker strongly denied the criminal allegations and accused prosecutors of attacking his wife for her longstanding friendships. He vowed to continue performing his duties as a senator for the Garden State.
Bob pleaded not guilty during a Sept. 27 court appearance, alongside Nadine. Daibes and Jose Uribe, the senator’s two co-conspirators, resolutely entered not guilty pleas. Hana also pleaded not guilty the previous day.
Despite calls from his fellow Democrats in the Senate, the New Jersey senator insisted that he won’t step down from his position as U.S. senator. He defiantly told reporters on Sept. 26, a day before entering his not guilty plea: “Because I’m innocent. What’s wrong with you guys?”
