A former official of the Biden administration’s Department of Energy (DOE) reportedly stole another person’s luggage while on a government trip to Nevada, according to a report.
Fox News recounted that erstwhile DOE official Sam Brinton, who identifies as “non-binary,” traveled to the Nevada National Security Site in early July 2022. The outlet cited internal DOE filings and expense reports obtained by watchdog group Functional Government Initiative (FGI). Based on the documents, Briton flew on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C. to Las Vegas on July 6, 2022 for a meeting and site visit for unspecified reasons.
Brinton then stole a suitcase upon landing at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport – with police officers stating that the luggage he purloined had a total estimated value of $3,670. It contained jewelry valued at $1,700, clothing worth $850 and makeup valued at $500. Later in December of the same year, Las Vegas prosecutors charged Brinton with grand larceny of an item valued between $1,200 and $5,000.
The official did not spend time behind bars in the grand larceny case after he pleaded no contest to the charges and waived his right to a trial. Brinton was ordered to pay $3,670.74 as restitution to the victim, alongside $500 in additional fees – with a criminal fine included. Clark County Judge Ann Zimmerman sentenced the non-binary official to a suspended jail sentence of 180 days and ordered him to “stay out of trouble.”
Aside from stealing random travelers’ suitcases, the nonbinary official had also charged his stay in Las Vegas to the taxpayer dime. Brinton stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club along the Las Vegas Strip upon arriving in Sin City, and departed on July 9. A DOE expense report filed in August 2022 showed that his four-day trip was estimated to have cost $1,951.50.
Brinton first made headlines in July 2022 when President Joe Biden appointed him as deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy. The department later announced in December of the same year that Brinton had left the agency without mentioning the reason why.
“It’s outrageous that tax dollars transported Brinton to and from the scene of a crime, putting the American public unwittingly at the wheel of the getaway car,” FGI spokesman Peter McGinnis said in a statement to Fox News.
“Senior officials committing petty crime while on the clock is a clear indication that something is dysfunctional in the personnel procedures. The federal government obviously needs a more stringent vetting process for senior-level positions.”
McGinnis is not alone in this sentiment. Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, is asking why the Energy Department’s security and vetting process missed Brinton’s apparent theft compulsion before any appointment.
“It is clear as day that felons should not hold security clearances,” he said back in December. “For months, I’ve been demanding answers from the DOE on their failed security clearance process. [But] [Energy] Secretary [Jennifer] Granholm has provided none.” (Related: STRIKE 3! Former DOE official Sam Brinton ARRESTED over a third case of luggage theft.)
“When people are appointed to critical positions with important national security responsibilities, Americans must be confident they can be trusted. The department must launch a thorough investigation into the vetting process. They have to respond to legitimate oversight inquiries. It’s in our national security interest.”
According to legal scholar Jonathan Turley, Brinton’s repeated luggage theft “has the markings of an individual who is so mentally unstable or delusional that the compulsion could not even be resisted on an official national security-related trip.”
“Of course, it is possible that this is not an irresistible compulsion – but a criminal calculation that the chances of suspicion or detection is reduced to a high-ranking government official on official travel. Yet, there should be answers on whether there were any indicators missed in the background investigation. Brinton was in a sensitive position and could have been targeted for blackmail or coercive measures by foreign intelligence or criminal elements,” Turley noted.
